Article Writing - Are You Making These 3 Serious Mistakes When Writing Articles For the Web?

The rules for writing on the web are a lot different than the ones you followed back in your high school English class. The first mistake is wasting your reader's time. Online your readers are in a hurry. They want to get the facts as quickly as possible so they can move along. They have no patience for long run on sentences that require commas and semi colons. There is no excuse for grammar and spelling mistakes but you can throw most of the rest of the rules for English composition out the window.

The next mistake is too much information in each paragraph. Most readers online do not actually read all the text. Instead they scan the pages looking for the information they are after. You can help them find that information byusing boldtype forthe first or topic sentence of each paragraph. Then keep the rest of the paragraph down to 2-3 more sentences. It is easier on your reader's eye to add a line break before the next paragraph begins.

Finally, the third mistake is writing at too high a grade level. This the hardest mistake to overcome for most professionals. Remember you are not writing for your peers but instead you are writing for your target market. They want information that is in a summary form with a tone that is informal or conversational.

To check the grade levels when using Word go to your help menu and type in readability statistics. There you will find out how to turn this option on. It also includes some other metrics for readability which are good to know such as the number of words per sentence, the number of passive sentences, and the word count.

The good news about all of these rules is they will actually make writing an article quicker. No more searching for those big ten dollar words. After I proof my articles for spelling and grammar I like to read it aloud just like I was speaking to someone in the room. This helps me change the sentence structure to fit that conversational style I am shooting for.
